Interventions Participants were randomized 2:1:1 to the TA (n = 110), SA (n = 59), or WC (n = 57) group. Analysis was conducted for data received through May 3, 2021. Women with early-stage breast cancer were eligible if they were taking an AI and scored 3 or higher on the Brief Pain Inventory Worst Pain (BPI-WP) item (score range, 0-10 higher scores indicate greater pain). Objective To examine the effect of acupuncture in reducing AI-related joint pain through 52 weeks.ĭesign, Setting, and Participants A randomized clinical trial was conducted at 11 sites in the US from May 1, 2012, to February 29, 2016, with a scheduled final date of follow-up of September 5, 2017, to compare true acupuncture (TA) with sham acupuncture (SA) or waiting list control (WC). Importance Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) have proven efficacy for the treatment of hormone-sensitive breast cancer however, arthralgias (pain and stiffness) contribute to nonadherence with therapy for more than 50% of patients. Efficacy of Intensive Acupuncture Versus Sham Acupuncture in Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Acupuncture of different treatment frequencies in knee osteoarthritis: a pilot randomised controlled trial. Comparison of Acupuncture vs Sham Acupuncture or Waiting List Control in the Treatment of Aromatase Inhibitor-Related Joint Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial. ![]() In fact, approximately 10% of patients in each groups received acupuncture voluntarily, which may not only diminish the observed differences between the groups but also exaggerate the long-term effect of acupuncture.ġ. Third, all patients were allowed to receive an excess 10 true acupuncture sessions between 24 and 52 weeks. Although sham acupuncture is neither an inert nor innocuous procedure, evidence of lack of long-term effect is building. These results support findings from a prior study reporting that true acupuncture had no benefit for knee osteoarthritis compared with sham acupuncture at week 8, but its effect became statistically significant by week 16 and was maintained at week 26. Interestingly, the maximal adjusted mean difference occurred at 52 weeks and was 1.08 points. The adjusted mean difference in Brief Pain Inventory between true acupuncture and sham acupuncture did not meet the statistical significance threshold by weeks 12, 16, 20, and 24. Second, the advantage of true acupuncture is long-term benefits compared with sham acupuncture. The combination of high dosage and low dosage acupuncture might be an important way to maximize benefits. The results corroborate a previous study suggesting that 3 sessions per week of acupuncture might be recommended for acute pain for knee osteoarthritis and 1 session per week of acupuncture might be recommended for longer-term treatment effect. In this study, acupuncture protocols were composed of 6 weeks twice weekly followed by 6 weeks weekly and the effect of acupuncture persisted at 40 weeks after the end of treatment. I have some comments.įirst, optimizing acupuncture treatment protocols is trending. They found patients who received 12 weeks of true acupuncture had reduced pain at 52 weeks compared with sham acupuncture and waiting list control, indicating long-term pain control effect of acupuncture. ![]() Shared Decision Making and Communicationĭr Hershman and colleagues reported the 52-week results from a multicenter randomized clinical trial (RCT) of acupuncture for aromatase inhibitor-related joint pain among breast cancer patients.Scientific Discovery and the Future of Medicine.Health Care Economics, Insurance, Payment.Clinical Implications of Basic Neuroscience.Challenges in Clinical Electrocardiography.
